Cut back torn paper and seal it
Shredded paper facing is cut to a clean edge with a utility knife and peeled away, and any crushed pocket is opened to sound gypsum. The raw core and the paper edges are then sealed with a fast-drying primer or shellac. Skip that step and the water in the compound soaks the paper fibers, which swell, lift, and leave a bubble under every coat of paint that follows.

Fill with setting-type compound and tape what crosses a seam
Fills go in with 20- or 45-minute setting-type compound, which cures by chemical reaction, does not shrink back into the pocket, and can take a second coat within the hour. Paper tape is embedded where a gouge crosses a joint or runs into a corner, and fiberglass mesh backs shallow, wide scrapes. Coats are pulled with a 6-inch knife and feathered with a 10- or 12-inch knife, then sanded with a fine sanding sponge.

Rebuild corners and through-holes
A crushed outside corner gets its bead cut out and replaced with new metal or vinyl bead, set straight, fastened, and coated in three passes. A hole larger than a fist gets a wood or drywall backer, a plug of new board, and tape at every edge. Can drywall a dog has scratched through be repaired, or does the wall need replacing?
Repaired, in nearly every case. Claw damage is concentrated in a strip a foot or two wide beside a door, so that strip is cut out to sound board, a piece of new drywall is fitted and taped, and the rest of the wall stays. Replacement only makes sense when the damage covers most of a sheet or the board has been soaked as well as scratched.
Why does the repair over pet scratches keep bubbling?
Because compound was spread over torn paper. The shredded facing absorbs water from the mud, swells, and lifts, and the bubble telegraphs through primer and paint. The cure is to cut the paper back to a clean edge, seal the raw gypsum and the edge with primer or shellac, and then fill. Done that way, the bubble does not come back.
How do I stop the dog from scratching the same wall again?
Training is a trainer's department, but the wall side is straightforward. A clear acrylic wall shield screwed on at claw height takes the abuse and wipes clean. A taller kick plate protects the door itself. A metal or vinyl corner guard stops a chewed or clawed corner. Does pet urine damage drywall, and can it be fixed?
Yes. Urine wicks up into the paper and gypsum at the bottom of the wall and into the baseboard behind it, and the odor stays in the material no matter what is painted over it. The repair is to remove the baseboard, cut out the lower section of affected drywall, seal the framing and slab edge with a shellac-based primer, and install new board and new base. Cleaning and painting alone rarely ends the smell.
Can a dented wall be fixed without cutting a hole?
If the paper is intact and the dent is shallow, yes: the depression is filled with setting-type compound in two thin coats, sanded, textured, primed, and painted. If the dent sounds hollow when tapped, the core behind it is crushed and the fill will sink over time, so we open the pocket to solid gypsum first. That is still a fill, not a cutout, and it is done in the same visit.
